In a letter to House leadership today, 166 members of the U.S. House of Representatives urged action on the federal electric vehicle (EV) tax credit through passage of the Driving America Forward Act, H.R. 2256. A copy of the letter, which was spearheaded by the House Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition, New Democrats, and Congressional Progressive Caucus, is available here.
In addition to the broad coalition of support in Congress, a diverse group of industry stakeholders and non-governmental organizations are advocating for reform of the federal EV tax credit. The credit provides an important consumer incentive to make EVs more accessible, fosters an emerging American electric vehicle manufacturing industry, improves air quality, enhances our national security, and helps combat climate change.
While the current EV tax credit has been successful in accelerating zero-emission vehicle deployment, these cars still comprise less than one percent of automobiles on the road. At a time when our leaders should be doubling down on policies that enable EV adoption in the U.S., instead, we risk letting the domestic market stagnate by failing to act. Meanwhile, the rest of the world forges ahead in their support of EVs, and we risk ceding a market that already supports approximately 300,000 American jobs.
Nearly 120 organizations (listed below) across the country—including the automotive industry, suppliers, utilities, environmentalists, public health groups, faith communities, consumer advocates, and minority representatives—have previously expressed their support for the bipartisan Driving America Forward Act. We urge the Congress to promptly pass this legislation before the end of the year.
